Gnyanam – A word to the wise,,,

Why slums are formed in India.

Posted in agriculture, future, India, industry, slums by Satya on March 4, 2009

Human beings have moved from hunter-gatherer to agricultural to industrial societies.

Our rural areas are largely agriculturals dependent on nature and unpredictable.

Our cities offer the predictability of industrialised societies.

This is why rural folk move to the cities. Once here, they use their hut building and camping technologies on land that they do not own, leaving good homes in the villages. They also find that they can earn money for labour directly, instead of labour for crops which may or may not come to harvest.

Since societies need food to live, either food prices must go up – which cannot happen in a country where most people are poor or food growing must become far more predictable.

This leads to over tilling the soil, heavy use of pesticides etc.

What will happen if this trend continues?

The tiney reverse trend of people going back to nature is very hard in India with deforestation, quarrying and tribals losing their homeland for trivial compensation.

Is no one else worried about the future?
